The required Japanese language proficiency varies depending on the program and institution.

  • Japanese Language Schools: No prior Japanese proficiency is typically required.​
  • University Programs in Japanese: Most universities require a minimum of JLPT N2 level to enroll in programs taught in Japanese. ​Japan Guide
  • English-Taught Programs: Some universities offer programs in English, which may not require Japanese proficiency. However, basic Japanese knowledge is beneficial for daily life.

To apply for a student visa to Japan, you will generally need:​

  • Valid Passport
  • Completed Visa Application Form
  • Passport-Size Photograph
  • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) issued by the Japanese Immigration Bureau
  • Letter of Admission from a Japanese educational institution​
  • Academic Transcripts and Certificates
  • Proof of Financial Support, such as bank statements or a letter of sponsorship
  • Proof of Japanese Language Proficiency, if applicable

Yes, international students in Japan can work part-time under certain conditions:

  • Work Permit: You must obtain permission from the immigration office to engage in part-time work.​
  • Working Hours:
    • Up to 28 hours per week during academic terms.
    • Up to 40 hours per week during school vacations.

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program is a Japanese government initiative to attract foreign workers in specific industries facing labor shortages.

There are two types:

  • SSW (i): For workers with considerable knowledge or experience in specified industry fields.
  • SSW (ii): For workers with proficient skills in specified industry fields.​

Application Process:

  1. Eligibility: Be at least 18 years old and in good health.​
  2. Pass Skills and Japanese Language Tests: Demonstrate proficiency in the relevant industry skills and Japanese language (e.g., JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic).​
  3. Secure Employment: Obtain a job offer from a Japanese company in one of the specified industries.​
  4. Apply for COE and Visa: With the job offer, apply for a Certificate of Eligibility and then the SSW visa.​
